Update 7th February, 2015: I think they stopped updating the playstore apps as they’ve added a self update mechanism into the app. It sometimes checks automatically for updates then prompts you to download them. You can also manually check for updates by launching the app then going to About >>> Check for updates. If any update is found it will show ‘Newer version available‘ then prompt you to Update or cancel. If you choose to update the download will commence in the background and when it’s done the installation will begin.
NOTE: For installation to be seamless, make sure your android device is set to install apps from unknown sources. You can enable that via Settings >> Security >> Unknown sources: Allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
Xiaomi has this habit of updating a select range of their devices every week and the MiBand fitness tracker is one of those. Unfortunately for over a month now I haven’t been receiving any android app updates and thus no firmware updates to fix crashes and what have you.
For some reason, they’ve stopped uploading updates to the Google Play Store since December 7th, 2014 so you will have to get the updates via the official Mi App Store. Fortunately you don’t need to register to download the apk file there.
Simply go to http://app.mi.com/detail/68548 and click on the button circled in red and labelled 1 in the screenshot below and the apk will start downloading to your device. To check the date the update was released, click on the menu circled in red and labelled 2.
As always once you install a new version of the app and sync the MiBand via bluetooth, the firmware will automatically be updated. The latest firmware version is 184.108.40.206 and the app no longer crashes when doing activities. :)
In other news, Xiaomi has officially released the rumoured MiBand app for Apple iOS. You can download it here.
